I created this personal project to evolve my skills in FX and experiment with particle and FLIP simulations. I modelled everything in the scene, except the car, using Houdini FX. This was the first time that I used USD to this extend and it really helped me to have a light scene and quick view port. Compositing was carried out in NukeX and changes to the sky were done inside Photoshop.

Everything starts at the mood-board phase, where I was gathering references and inspirations for my shot. I created a board after that inside Photoshop to draw my shot and give me the opportunity to think about the angle and the layout of my scene.
After I had a layout of my scene, I started modelling the pavement, wall, ground and lamp post that were included in the scene. After this I prepared my geometry for the simulations. For the car, I deleted non essential geometry, that would make my simulations unnecessarily heavier and carried out my POP and FLIP simulations. For the ripples on the puddles, I just used a ripple solver to deform a plane. Then I exported all my assets as USD and imported them into Solaris.
In Solaris, I started by importing my cameras and caching them to make my scene run smoothly. After this, using layer breaks, I was able to import all my geometry and simulations and start working on the texturing and lighting. The use of graft branches, helped me maintain a very tidy network, which made the process streamlined and efficient. Everything was rendered individually and with different passes (including crypto-mattes to have more control over my renders in the compositing stage).
The compositing happened in NukeX, by utilising the Crypto-matte pass that was exported from Houdini FX and Karma. Separate treatments were carried out to change the look for the puddles and the reflections. The sky was changed a bit, by adding some mountains in Photoshop and then projecting the sky on a card in 3D space to utilise my exported camera that was imported in Nuke.
